Buble woos thousands at Civic Center
Your every word is met with hoots and your quiet moments are punctuated by hollers.
As Canadian crooner Michael Buble sang the closing notes of his yearning love song "Lost" on Friday night, the sentimental hush over the Pensacola Civic Center was broken by a giddy, seemingly uncontrollable shriek from the audience.
"Take it off!"
The personable young singer, dressed in a sharp dark suit and shiny black shoes, had the nearly full house eating out of his hands from the moment his energetic show kicked off with "I'm Your Man."
Buble, who performed to a sold-out crowd at the Civic Center last year, returned with a 13-piece band, including a powerhouse eight-member horn section -- and plenty of lady-pleasing charm.
Backed by simple but effective lighting and staging, the slim singer bopped and skidded throughout his high-energy set, but it was Buble's buttery vocals, not his dancing, that sent the female-dominated, mostly middle-aged crowd into a tizzy on classic tunes such as "Me and Mrs. Jones" and "Fever," plus original hits including "Everything" and "Home."
Along with his rich, Sinatra-esque singing, Buble's ability to alternately charm and mock his audience proved to be a major part of his concert appeal.
The entertainer joked with the crowd and his band, chatted up individual audience members, was heartily groped by others and kept fans of all ages giggling with his cheeky humor.
At one point, Buble singled out a 12-year-old in the crowd and jokingly told the youngster that it was fans like he who kept Buble from going the Amy Winehouse route.
And, as the shrieking fan had requested, by the end of the night, clothes were coming off -- just not Buble's.
The singer seemed amused and perhaps a little taken aback when bras started hitting the stage after a rousing musical medley that included both Elvis Presley's "That's Alright" and the Village People's "YMCA."
"I think you need this more than I do," a grinning Buble admonished a brassiere-lobbing fan in the front row.
Musical highlights of the concert were a gospel-tinged rendition of Frank Sinatra's "That's Life" and a soulful encore performance of Donny Hathaway's "A Song for You."
"I'll keep coming back as long as you'll have me," an appreciative Buble told the adoring crowd and from their response, it seems certain that the singer will find his way to Pensacola again and again.

Review: Birmingham News
by Mary Colurso
Doing it his way: Michael Buble offers snazzy, jazzy show at BJCC
Review rating: Four out of five stars
So many things were explained Wednesday night during Michael Buble's concert at the BJCC Arena.
The correct pronunciation of his last name (a clipped and zippy "buhb-lay," with a slight emphasis on the last syllable), offered by the singer himself.
The reason for his popular appeal on stage: a brash, retro-Rat Pack vibe that's lanced by self-awareness and a satirical sense of humor. Underneath all of that, a generous heart, which Buble revealed to his audience in carefully measured doses.
His Achilles heel: The inability to transcend and elevate mediocre material. Buble, 33, was at his best when he applied his clear, elastic tenor to the Great American Songbook, covering jazzy numbers such as "Call Me Irresponsible," "I've Got the World on a String," "That's Life" and "Fever." He also was sharply effective on well-crafted tunes such as Leonard Cohen's "I'm Your Man."
On the rare occasions when Buble fumbled during the 8:50 p.m. show, or managed to seem entirely ordinary, it was during so-so, saccharine ballads such as "Lost," which the Canadian crooner wrote with two contemporaries, Alan Chang and Jann Arden.
In general, however, Buble performed like a champ for about 100 minutes in Birmingham, backed by a vibrant 13-member band. (One of the players, trombonist Nick Vayenas, hails from here and was given a fun, featured spot in the show.)
Comparisons to Frank Sinatra, Bobby Darin and Harry Connick Jr. were inevitable, but Buble projected a real affinity for his well-worn catalog, projecting authentic emotions and interpreting lyrics with skill and passion.
Dressed in a snazzy dark suit and shiny black shoes, with a clump of spiky hair atop his forehead, Buble looked both classic and contemporary. His attitude was right in line with his wardrobe, as Buble led his musicians through a polished program that we might call old-school with a twist.
His version of "Stardust," for example, came with the help of Naturally 7, a septet of singers from New York who pride themselves on a cappella vocal play. They also opened the evening for Buble, displaying jaw-dropping prowess at their particular specialty: imitating instruments and blending that with rap, beat-boxing and silky R&B harmonies.
Buble was framed by the innovative troupe as he offered the venerable "Stardust," written by Hoagy Carmichael in 1927. A fresh approach, an interesting contrast, a nicely textured moment.
High-tech production values, from the sound to the lights to the stage set, made the entire concert glow. One disappointment, however: a skimpy turnout of about 4,500 people in the 16,000-seat arena.
Surprisingly, Buble announced the attendance figure from the stage -- something performers never do -- and thanked the crowd for spending their time and money on his music in a dicey economic climate. He sounded gentle and gracious, not false or pandering.
Another reason to like Buble, for a group of listeners who obviously arrived at the BJCC with built-in enthusiasm and affection for him. He received a standing ovation, and plenty of folks left smiling.

Review: Fort Worth Star Telegram
by Cynthia Wahl
Buble puts on 'unbelievable’ show at the Fort Worth Convention Center
Saturday night at the packed Fort Worth Convention Center, Michael Buble said: "You’re only as good as your audience. If that’s true, then I was freakin’ unbelievable." And it was an unbelievable show.
Buble had as much fun with his show as we did watching him. The hour and a half of hand-clapping, finger-snapping pleasure featured his nods to Frank Sinatra. And Buble knows how to work the camera for the video screens sandwiching the stage. It never felt like he was just going through the motions, though — he was the genuine article. He started with I’m Your Man and ended with That’s Life.
His eight-piece horn section packs a powerful punch. And the Canadian singer has a lot of fun bantering with his "family," the guys he set out touring with six years ago. A fun clip featured hometown trombonist Nick Vayenas singing Try a Little Tenderness while Buble "karaoked" on trombone.
We got a sneak peek of Buble’s new record with You’re Nobody ’Til Somebody Loves You. He said he and the band went old-school in the studio, recording together in one room.
The man is wicked funny and appreciates his audience. He focused on concertgoers Emily, 10, and Hailey, 7, and said that when he was their age, he was enjoying Sinatra, Sammy Davis Jr. and Dean Martin. The young keep their legacies alive.
There was a funny side note when he asked the girls whether they know who Amy Winehouse is, and they didn’t (good thing!), then tore in to Rehab for a line or two.
When he sang Home, the images on the screen behind him featured the Texas flag, the Stockyards, Texas Christian University and our beloved Cowboys.
His "sad" portion featured Lost, You Know How I Feel, You’re Everything so he followed those songs with something for the guys: a little Elvis and the Village People’s YMCA. A sailor in the audience actually did the arm movements.
All the posturing and slipping around on stage made for a vivacious evening with Buble enjoying it just as much as we did.

Review: The Wichita Eagle
by Jeffrey Lutz
Wit, charm and musical stylings make Michael Buble a hit at the Coliseum
Podiatrists probably see a spike in business the day after a Michael Buble concert. As innocent as toe tapping is, it could cause damage when done nonstop for 90 minutes.
But it's almost impossible not to keep the beat to a Buble song, and toe tapping was in full swing on Friday night when Buble performed at the Kansas Coliseum in front of 6,500 fans — many of them shrieking females of all ages.
Buble, a Grammy award-winning Canadian crooner, could get by during live shows on music alone. His versatile voice swings easily from jazz to R&B to pop standards sung in the key of Frank Sinatra.
But he keeps those who might be only marginally interested in his music (translation: some men tagging along with their significant others) entertained by incorporating audience interaction and comedy into his shows.
His first such encounter involved a couple seated in the first few rows. After guessing that the man would probably score some points with his partner for accompanying her to the concert, Buble had a favor to ask of the woman:
"If you go home and do it, would you just say my name once?" She agreed with a nod.
There was a funny one-sided conversation with an 8-year-old-girl, Emma, and a gag with his backup band: When the band got a standing ovation after his introduction of it, Buble mocked disgust and stormed off the stage.
As a band member pretended to step in to take over the show, Buble returned and complained that he was worn out from "a seven-hour bus trip that brought me to wherever I am — Missouri." The crowd booed and he mocked them, too. All in good fun, of course.
While such gags were show-stoppers, Buble also gave his fans what they really wanted — his songs. He took the stage at 8:45 p.m. after comedian Keith Terry provided a 20-minute warmup act with a set of outdated jokes.
Wearing a black suit with a white shirt and black tie, Buble began his16-song set with "I'm Your Man," a cover of a Leonard Cohen-penned tune.
He covered other hits such as "Me and Mrs. Jones," "I've Got the World on a String" and "You're Nobody 'Til Somebody Loves You."
But the highlights were his original hits — "Home" and "Everything," which reached No. 1 on the adult contemporary charts, and "Lost," a song from his most recent album. During "Home," shots of Wichita landmarks were shown on a video screen behind the band.
It's not difficult to see why Buble's fans adore him. The 34-year-old smiled throughout his songs, danced provocatively and made them laugh Friday night. He responded to the women in the audience who cried out to him — even the ones he couldn't quite understand. Before starting a song he uttered to one such fan, "I have no idea what you just said."
Addressing some of the men in the audience, he explained that his persona was a creation of his record label and he really had dreamed of being a hockey player. He recited lyrics of some of the songs he sings and said, "Who writes this crap?"
That turned into a rendition of "YMCA" — possibly the least macho song ever made — but didn't lose the men, who continued to tap their toes.
The 90-minute set didn't seem long enough for fans who were still chanting for more as Buble left the stage at around 10:15. His commanding stage presence and soulful voice surely won over those unfamiliar with his music and cemented the adulation of those who have loved him for years.

Review: Knoxville News Sentinel
by Wayne Bledsoe
Young singer, old school
Michael Buble keeps old pop style alive
Singer Michael Buble doesn't pretend that the men in his audiences came of their own free will. In fact, he points them out in his concerts - pointing out that they will thank him later.
If they do, all the better, but watching Buble's show isn't exactly torture.
Buble and his 13-piece group performed Sunday for a crowd of approximately 7,500 at Thompson-Boling Arena.
The group Naturally 7 started out the night with a set that was often amazing. The seven-man outfit blended smooth a cappella vocal harmonies with a surprising skill at imitating various instruments as accompaniment. Upright bass, drums, flutes, wailing electric guitar, harmonica, trumpets, trombones and even turntable scratching were no problem for the group. Members called the style "vocal play" and took time to demonstrate each member's particular talent. The vocal style was reminiscent of fellow a cappella group Take 6, but the vocal instrumentation put the act in its own category entirely.
Buble, who took the stage at 9 p.m., relied on different talents to charm his audience.
Buble does not have a spectacular voice. He isn't doing anything particularly new. He isn't an artist with a capital "A." Buble is instead an entertainer who is preserving a type of entertainment that is nearly lost and, here and there, giving it a modern boost. In the 1950s or early 1960s, Buble would've had a lot of company - guys who were inspired by Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr. and Tony Bennett and strived to play Las Vegas and have their own TV variety specials. Today, Buble's only company is Harry Connick Jr. (although Connick has more jazz chops) and a handful of lesser-known singers.
Saying that Buble's voice is less than spectacular is not actually a slight. His voice is good, and what he lacks in range he makes up for with a likeable stage presence. Again, Buble is a young guy from the old school. He talks with the audience, picks people out of the crowd to tease, and gets into the fray to let fans take pictures of him. He pretends to be a jerk and gets his band in on the act to poke fun at his expense.
While it's easy to peg Buble as a Sinatra imitator (and he does sometimes borrow too heavily from Sinatra's vocal style), he has some surprises. Probably few in Buble's audience recognized that the opening song, "I'm Your Man," was written by cult singer-songwriter Leonard Cohen. And Cohen would surely enjoy hearing his smoldering song given a Las Vegas treatment.
His take on the classic "Stardust" included Naturally 7 for another sweet moment. And, Buble's original songs are much better than the average adult contemporary hits.
Even if the men in the audience didn't get lucky later on, spending a couple of hours with Buble didn't make for an unlucky evening.

Review: Adelaide Now
by Sam Kelton
GALLANTRY was well and truly alive in Adelaide last night as Grammy Award-winning crooner Michael Buble dazzled a predominantly female crowd at the Entertainment Centre.
A deafening roar erupted when the well-dressed, cheeky frontman took the stage.
The wisecracking singer, who has sold 11 million records worldwide, captured the audience's attention with his cool, calm and crisp live show and his larger than life stage presence, proving his stadium tour and two-night run in Adelaide a worthy investment.
His first song was I'm Your Man. Then just a few songs into his two-hour set, the singer casually hopped over the stage barrier to meet the younger fans of the show, posing for photos and accepting drawings before heading onstage to return to his smooth version of Under My Skin.
The 32-year-old was backed by a big band which was just as striking as its dapper frontman, winning the crowd over with hits Feeling Good, Fever and Me and Mrs Jones.
Touring on the strength of his latest album, Call Me Irresponsible, Buble's Adelaide show was a far cry from the reported sloppy performance in Sydney last week.
It has been alleged that Buble performed under the influence of alcohol, stumbling with unsteady footwork, leading to a backlash from concert goers.
Silencing his critics with a smooth performance, Buble showed he was on top of his game, leaving audiences more than satisfied. Michael Buble returns to the Entertainment Centre next Tuesday.

Review: The Daily Telegraph
IN keeping with the title of his current album and tour, Canadian crooner Michael Buble invited Sydney fans to Call Me Irresponsible after he allegedly performed drunk on stage at the Entertainment Centre on Saturday night.
Online music forums have been flooded with complaints about the sloppy standard of Buble's second Sydney show, with even diehard fans attacking the Grammy Award-winning singer for his lack of professionalism.
Did you see Buble sozzled on stage? Tell us below.
According to several concertgoers, the singer appeared on stage looking dishevelled and unshaven, his eyes bleary and red.
And it was more of a case of wobble than warble when the star performer delivered his trademark big band hits, with the capacity crowd left stunned by Buble's slurred speech and unsteady movements.
Telling the crowd he was drinking straight vodka, the singer then made light of his state by singing the chorus to drug and alcohol addict Amy Winehouse's hit song Rehab.
"To get up on stage in such an obnoxiously inebriated state that your performance suffers is simply disrespectful to your fans," one critic wrote on website Oz Music Scene.
A local spokeswoman for Buble's 18-date, sold-out Australian tour could only muster a "no comment" when asked if the singing sensation had been drinking before Saturday night's show.
"Michael was in terrific form and it was a great show," was the official line given to Confidential yesterday.

Michael Bublé doesn't fire on all cylinders but still pleases fans in Anaheim
The crooner, showing the effects of a cold and a long tour, was nonetheless entertaining.
Canadian crooner Michael Bublé once aspired to be a professional hockey player, but his erratic performance on Saturday night didn't score many goals at the home of the Anaheim Ducks.
Maybe it was tour fatigue. The sold out Honda Center gig – Bublé's biggest appearance to date here – closed a lengthy American jaunt. Early on, he battled a persistent cough and several songs suffered from clipped or rushed phrasing. Drawn out comedy bits, extended chats and a foray into the audience brought any momentum the stellar 13-piece group achieved to a screeching halt.
Yet that didn't seem to faze female enthusiasts of all ages who screamed with abandon each time the highly charismatic Bublé added a few hip thrusts to the music or sang seductive lyrics.
The list of vocalists jumping on the Great American Songbook bandwagon of late is a mile long. But it wasn't some calculated career move for the 32-year-old Bublé. Influenced by Frank Sinatra and Bobby Darin, he started doing the standards in Vancouver nightclubs as a teenager and toiled for nearly a decade before finally being discovered by veteran producer David Foster at a wedding.
In the five years since I caught his live Orange County debut at the Coach House in San Juan Capistrano, Bublé's career has skyrocketed. All three studio CDs are now certified platinum. His latest effort, "Call Me Irresponsible," won a Grammy, reached No. 1 on the Billboard 200 (where it recently returned to the top 20), remains atop the jazz chart after nearly a year and spawned two top 10 Adult Contemporary radio hits.
Bublé and his band – including a tight eight-man horn section – front-loaded the 100-minute, 19-song set with selections from "Call Me Irresponsible" (most of the disc got an airing). First up was "I'm Your Man," a slow-building number by fellow Canuck Leonard Cohen that was pure smoldering sexuality.
"It Had Better Be Tonight" boasted a feisty Latin dance rhythm and featured Bublé racing across the unusual stage (no easy task, considering a steep midsection slope led to awkward climbs and slides from the entertainer).
A jazzy take on "Me and Mrs. Jones" followed. The ode to adultery from Philly soul architects Gamble & Huff was an early highlight. The same couldn't be said of "Fever," far more restrained here and in a different arrangement than on 2003's "Michael Bublé."
Fortunately, the singer recovered during a fun, swinging "I've Got the World on a String," complete with call and response action. Seated on a stool next to pianist Alan Chang, Bublé did some wonderful elegant ballads spotlighting his creamy vocal range. The crowd was practically silent for the stunning "Always on My Mind," his own hit "Lost" and Dean Martin's more upbeat, "You're Nobody Till Somebody Loves You."
Now energized, Bublé spun around, danced and basically put everything he had into a dynamic "Feeling Good" and got a rousing response. "Home," also from 2005's "It's Time," featured a cool montage of Anaheim-related landmarks on the big screen: Downtown Disney, Angel Stadium, the Grove of Anaheim and Anaheim Ducks (a loud cheer made Bublé laugh).
Suddenly, a few hundred ladies were allowed to rush the stage. Bublé made fun of his own song "Everything" and went into a spiel about males in attendance not feeling macho hearing all the ballads. So guitarist Dino Menghin and a couple horn players joined him at the front of the stage for a somewhat humorous medley of Elvis Presley's "That's All Right (Mama) and the Village People's "Y.M.C.A."
The final stretch, with "That's Life" (aided by a gospel choir) and Queen's "Crazy Little Thing Called Love," had the audience up and dancing. A gracious, choked-up Bublé thanked people for spending their hard-earned dough in such a troubled economy. He closed with a stirring, partially a cappella take on Leon Russell's "Song for You."

Buble makes good with Great American Songbook
If Tony Bennett is the reigning king of the Great American Songbook, then Michael Buble is its crown prince.
That's a lot to rest on the shoulders of a 32-year-old vocalist, one who only has three full-length studio albums under his belt, but Buble certainly lived up to that designation during his concert on Saturday night at the HP Pavilion in San Jose.
He opened his 100-minute set by jazzing up fellow Canadian Leonard Cohen's "I'm Your Man," an appropriate choice since, in 2008, Michael Buble is definitely "the people's choice." Jazz aficionados might say that other singers have better chops _ and they'd be right _ but to truly follow in the footsteps of Tony Bennett and Frank Sinatra, a performer must also achieve mass popularity. That's something that Buble has done in spades.
He's nothing less than a phenomenon _ a young man who sings like Frankie, sells concert tickets like Springsteen and moves records like Mariah. Remember the sensation that Harry Connick, Jr. caused with the "Harry Met Sally" soundtrack back in 1989? Good. Now, multiple it tenfold and you get Buble's current spot in the market place.
His latest CD, "Call Me Irresponsible," hit No. 1 on the Billboard Album Chart shortly after being released last May. Equally impressive is the fact that Buble is now a legitimate arena act, able to draw some 10,000 fans to HP.
Fortunately, those eye-popping numbers are matched, even surpassed, by Buble's prowess on the live stage. He's taken his nightclub shtick and found a way to bring it into arenas, with amazingly little lost in translation. The production we saw in San Jose was decidedly straightforward _ just a vocalist leading a sensational 13-piece band, complete with a horn section, through tunes that, for the most part, have been around for decades _ yet Buble was still able to make a connection with those sitting an ice rink away in the so-called "cheap seats."
Very few performers go to greater lengths to strike that connection than Buble. It's almost like he puts developing that bond above even singing the actual songs. In one instance, immediately following a lovely burn through "Fever," the vocalist spotted one of the younger audience members and decided to introduce himself from the stage. When that didn't prove intimate enough, Buble went into the crowd to shake the hand of the 7-year old kid.
"It means a lot to me that you are here," he said earnestly.
Buble takes his role as an ambassador of the Great American Songbook very seriously. He knows that it's partially up to him to introduce these classic tunes to the next generation. The vocalist does so by including bits of all-ages humor in the concert and tossing in some hip-hop and rock edges into the mix to broaden the material's appeal _ the latter, most assuredly, would make the so-called Jazz Police cringe.
Just because he works hard to be popular, however, doesn't mean he should be put in the same category as Rod Stewart and Barry Manilow, two pop stars who mined the oldies catalog as late-career moves. Buble is the real deal and his versions of "World on a String" and "That's Life" in San Jose carried the same type of confident swagger that the singer's idol, Sinatra, would've given the tunes.
Although Buble can be called a Sinatra or Bennett wannabe _ in that he wants to be like them _ he is far from being a Vegas-style impersonator. He's got his own deal going on, which he made perfectly clear when he chose to dedicate a song to the men in the house. It turned out to a rockin' cover of Elvis Presley's first single, "That's Alright, Mama," but that one, Buble decided, didn't quite fit the occasion. He said he needed something more "macho."
So, of course, he turned to the "Macho Men" and sang a jazzed-up take on the Village People's "Y.M.C.A." that had the crowd members _ the same ones that had just gleefully sang along to "Feeling Good" and other standards _ waving their arms in the air and acting like they were at a disco.
Buble's approach may not always be orthodox, but it's undeniably effective.

Review: Arizona Daily Star
by Cathalena E. Burch
Michael Bublé flashed a schoolboy grin at the 12-year-old girl in the front row of the Tucson Arena Wednesday night.
How cute, he mused aloud, as the girl with a mouthful of braces smiled and blushed.
Her name was Samantha and she was with her mother.
If it weren't for kids like her, Bublé told Samantha, he'd easily be another Amy Winehouse — a reference to the troubled Grammy-winning pop singer.
Bublé then hopped from the stage into the 8,000-strong audience and hugged the girl while her mom snapped pictures.
It took about three seconds before an avalanche of fans descended upon him, cameras at the ready, arms outstretched for their hugs.
It was a choreographed moment, to be sure — one of many — but it transcended the cavernous arena and closed the generation gaps of those gathered inside.
Whether we thought it was schlocky or awe-shucks sweet, we had to admit: We like this guy.
In the age of screamo, emo and rap, Bublé is a curiosity. He croons about "Me and Mrs. Jones" one minute, then sweats out "Fever" the next to a crowd that is a veritable generational melting pot: tweens, young girls, college-age kids, middle-age moms and their moms.
On Wednesday night, Bublé prompted schoolgirl shrills from the thousands of women in the audience and admirable applause from the men when he lit into those old Frank Sinatra and Great American Songbook classics. To see 20-something girls in skin-tight mini-dresses belting out "Call me irresponsible, call me unreliable / Throw in undependable, too" was like slipping into a time warp.
Surely these songs are not supposed to be cool? Surely they don't know the lyrics?
For whatever reason — whether it's Bublé's boy-next-door good looks or his silky, melt-an-ice-cube vocal prowess — the Canadian crooner strikes a universal chord.
The crowd Wednesday night created a wall of screams when he slid down the inclined stage and landed front and center in the middle of the tango-tinged Henry Mancini-Johnny Mercer classic "It Had Better Be Tonight." He twisted his hips for effect — it resembled more of a spasm than a dance move — prompting even the older women in the crowd to swoon.
In between slickly choreographed banter, including comic interludes with his impressive brass section, Bublé added new sheen and contemporary jazzy-pop-inclined arrangements to classic tunes — "I've Got the World on a String," "That's Life," "How Sweet It Is (to Be Loved by You)."
Then he dimmed the house lights and, with a single spotlight on him and his pianist/band leader Alan Chang, he made a fine argument to include Willie Nelson's "Always on My Mind" in the next chapter of the Great American Songbook.
For nearly two hours, Bublé alternated from classic crooner to nightclub schlocker. It was one of the most entertaining shows to hit Tucson since Bublé's last Tucson appearance — a 2006 sold-out gig at the much smaller Tucson Music Hall next to the arena.
Even the men who were reluctantly dragged to the show got their fix.
To make them feel at home, the 32-year-old singer vowed to inject some machismo into the show.
So he put on his best Elvis swagger and warbled "It's Alright" with two of his eight brass players backing him on harmony vocals.
We're going to get even more macho, he yelled to the crowd, then launched into the most unmacho of male anthems — Village People's "Y.M.C.A.," complete with effeminate gestures and suggestive hip thrusts.
Funny thing: The men in the audience happily flopped their arms in the air for the YMCA dance.
Bublé has only a handful of original songs and contemporary pop tunes, including his No. 1 hit ballad "Home." When he played it Wednesday night, the slick video screens behind him flashed Tucson scenes, including the University of Arizona, "A" Mountain and Hotel Congress. It was touching.
The stunning New York-based vocal-play ensemble Naturally 7 opened the show and rejoined Bublé for his set-closing "That's Life." The group was so amazing even Bublé couldn't resist catching them in action affecting with incredible clarity the sound of a full band — drums, bass, horns, guitars — with their voices Bublé hung out at the side of the stage watching the group throughout their 40-minute set.

Smitten fans get Bublé and good show
Despite playing the city's largest venue, Michael Bublé promised to keep his show Sunday night at the Qwest Center Omaha "intimate."
Michael Bublé attracted a female-heavy crowd of about 8,000 to the Qwest Center Omaha on Sunday.Judging by the giggles, squeals, catcalls and infatuated looks on the faces of the female-heavy crowd, it was fans who wanted to get "intimate" with him.
Sitting through the Canadian singer's show — a return visit to Omaha after his 2006 concert at the Music Hall — it was hard to not get the impression that he could have just stood onstage and recited the alphabet and the 8,000 fans there still would have gone bonkers for him.
Opening with Leonard Cohen's "I'm Your Man," Bublé generated screams from fans on countless occasions. When his initials flashed on the stage curtain at the start of the show, they screamed. When he slid around onstage or swiveled his hips, they screamed.
And when he dashed down into the first few rows, fans went wild, touching, hugging and snapping photos of him. One woman even got both hands full of Bublé's bottom. Another woman gave him a sack of doughnuts.
It's easy to see why Bublé Nation gets giddy over the guy.
He's cute, if you're into the whole clean-cut, boyish kind of thing. He's charming, too, in a goofy, self-deprecating way that got laughs from schoolgirls and grandmas alike at Sunday's show.
More important, though, he's got a great set of pipes, charisma and a terrific 13-piece band — including an eight-man horn section — that elevate his cover songs to an enjoyable level, rather than the cheesiness common in some tribute acts.
Many in the crowd could have sat there all night and listened to him sing the pop and jazz standards that have made him a star. But instead of stretching his show out too long, he delivered a well-paced set that lasted about 1½ hours and covered music from several decades.
For fans of '50s pop, there was Peggy Lee's signature song, "Fever."
For fans of '70s soul, there was the romantic "Me and Mrs. Jones." When he crooned, "We've got a thiiiing, going on," you could feel his adoring audience going weak in the knees.
Among his strongest performances were a cover of Willie Nelson's "Always on My Mind," in which Bublé was accompanied by his pianist and music director, Alan Chang, and a dramatic rendition of Nina Simone's "Feeling Good."
His set also featured the title track to his latest album, "Call Me Irresponsible," as well as a pair of adult-contemporary pop songs that Bublé co-wrote: "Lost" and "Home." During the latter song, video screens showed footage of the Old Market, Mutual of Omaha, Rosenblatt Stadium, Offutt Air Force Base and other local landmarks.
Opening the show was New York band Naturally 7. The a cappella group features seven male vocalists who mimic various instruments, including drums, guitars, bass and more, all with their voices.
Though it was brief, the group's 25-minute performance was a fun start to an overall entertaining evening.

Buble's D.M. show thrilling minus awkward high jinks
Michael Buble stormed off the stage midway through his performance Friday night at Wells Fargo Arena.
But it wasn't a big deal, it was part of the show.
Buble, the 32-year-old crooner who is Generation X's heir apparent to Frank Sinatra, initially stepped out of the spotlight to let his 14-member band play an instrumental. But when the musicians egged on the crowd to give them a standing ovation, Buble pretended to be furious and left the stage in a huff.
It was one of several awkwardly scripted moments in Buble's two-hour show. Buble was excellent when he focused on the music. But his between-song high jinks, which also included crawling into the crowd to hug a terrified 13-year-old girl, pretending one of his band members was from Des Moines and leading the crowd in round of "YMCA," brought the show down a notch in my book.
Since Buble is performing in massive arenas — there were about 8,000 in attendance Friday night — instead of intimate theaters, he must feel the need to add these bells and whistles to keep from getting swallowed by the space. But Buble has so much cocky charm and such a casually confident voice that he would have been better off without interludes.
In an age when "American Idol" singers routinely seek a soullessly perfect pop voice, Buble's voice is refreshingly unselfconscious, harking back to his idols in the Rat Pack. Buble sings like he's not even trying, like he's just naturally pouring out his heart and soul, and his voice is thrilling to hear live.
Buble, wearing his signature fitted black suit, white shirt and skinny black tie, opened the show with "I'm Your Man" from his latest album, "Call Me Irresponsible," which hit No. 1 on Billboard's album chart last year and his since sold almost 1.5 million copies.
"I'm Your Man," with its mid-tempo vibe, was a slightly demure way to open the show. But Buble picked things up with the next song, the quick-paced and salsafied "It Had Better Be Tonight."
During one of Buble's biggest hits, "Home," which he co-wrote for his 2005 breakout album, "It's Time," a large video screen behind the stage came alive with images of Des Moines landmarks and sports-team logos.
Sadly, the video wasn't especially well done and it seemed to distract from an otherwise beautiful song.
By the end of the show, a throng of women had swarmed to the base of the stage. Buble had first made them swoon earlier in the show with "You're Always on My Mind," and finished the job with one of the last numbers of the night, "A Song For You." Buble proved he's more than deserving of such adoration.

Buble wows the faithful at the Resch
Half of the 4,333 fans at the Michael Buble concert are waking up this morning more convinced than ever of the one thing they already knew going into the Resch Center on Wednesday night: They're completely in love with the man. (Note the grown woman holding up "The Future Mrs. Buble'' sign.)
The other half -- the half most likely talked into going by their wives and girlfriends -- has to be thinking that wasn't nearly as painful or rash-inducing as they thought it was going to be. (See the Brett Favre retirement jokes, the sampling of Amy Winehouse's "Rehab,'' the giant Packers foam finger for introducing the band.)
Somewhere in between both of those camps, there's one 10-year-old fan who has a great story to take to school today. To the envy of every woman in the crowd, not only did Buble call her "baby,'' but he came down from the stage to give her a hug and pose for a photo in her row while Dad worked the camera.
So let there be no doubt about the Canadian crooner's far-reaching appeal -- young, old, men, women, first-timers who didn't know how to pronounce his last name, diehards who shopped the fancy merch booths like it was their favorite boutique.
"I'm a badass,'' Buble said at one point in the show, bemoaning his nice-guy reputation.
Not sure anybody was buying that -- not with those puppy-dog eyes and that designer suit -- but Buble is a showman. He worked the Resch Center like it was the classiest showroom in Las Vegas. One minute his throwback style was effortlessly summoning the spirits of Frank Sinatra and Dean Martin, the next he was tossing cheeseheads out to the crowd.
The way he oozed charisma -- every finger snap, every dance move, every lean against the piano -- there's probably someone still trying to mop it up from the arena floor.
From Leonard Cohen's "I'm Your Man'' as the confident opener to the swing give-and-take with his exuberant nine-piece horn section on "I've Got the World on a String,'' Buble offered up playful renditions from the pop standards catalogue.
Along with his five-piece band, he put some serious swagger in "Feeling Good,'' cracked up for his video-camera close-ups during "Fever'' and invited fans from back in the arena to "come to me'' during a celebratory arrangements of "Save the Last Dance for Me'' and Queen's "Crazy Little Thing Called Love.''
Some of the biggest applause of the night came for one of his own songs, "Home,'' accompanied by video footage shot around Green Bay and a shout-out to the large contingent of his family members he said were in the audience.
The slick lighting and ultra-modern video panels went dark for Buble to sing "Always on My Mind'' with just piano accompaniment. It might have been the best moment of the night -- just the silhouette of a singer against the stage curtain. Ol' Blue Eyes surely would've approved.

Bublé's singing evokes Sinatra
His comfort with soul surpasses Ol' Blue Eyes
Michael Bublé might be too modest or perhaps simply too smart to admit it, but he clearly means to carry on the legacy of Frank Sinatra in the 21st century.
The title song of his new album - "Call Me Irresponsible" - is a Sinatra tune. That and two other Sinatra anthems, "I've Got the World on a String" and "That's Life," showed up in Bublé's set list Tuesday night at the Bradley Center. For all his undeniable talent and showmanship, it's obviously far too early to seriously compare Bublé to a foundational legend like Sinatra.
But there is one specific sense in which Bublé tops the Chairman. Sinatra rarely faltered musically, but when he did, it tended to happen late in his career whenever he tried to adapt himself to the songwriting of the rock and soul era. For all his swagger and attitude, the nuances of rock-influenced songwriting escaped him.
But perhaps because Bublé grew up with rock in the air, as it were, he is at ease with more contemporary material in a way that Sinatra never was. Working with a classic big band and a full horn section, Bublé is able to take soul classics like "Me and Mrs. Jones" or Leonard Cohen's "I'm Your Man" and meld them into the great American songbook alongside the classic standards.
In fact, the best moments Tuesday night tended to fall outside the Gershwin-Cole Porter-Johnny Mercer era. "Me and Mrs. Jones" was a prime example. When he needs to, Bublé can reference the great soul singing of the '60s with telling nuance. A romping big-band arrangement of Marvin Gaye's "How Sweet It Is" was another late set highlight.
Part of it is youth and athleticism. In some ways, Bublé on stage is reminiscent of Jackie Wilson, of all people. Bublé can kick a mic stand to attention with the best of them. He used one little staging item to full advantage. The area in front of his drummer's kit was a short ramp, and Bublé was gliding and sliding along it for much of the night.
On occasion he bettered his more contemporary influences. His reading of "Always On My Mind" infused the song with a warmth and tenderness beyond what either Elvis or Willie Nelson were able to find.
There were one or two questionable choices. I would argue that "That's Life" is a song you need to grow into. "That's Life" was the mature Sinatra at full swagger. For all his energy and charisma, Bublé might want to wait another decade before tackling an epitaph like it.
But that is a nit. Besides his command of the standards of two very different eras, Bublé is a master showman who is getting only better.

Michael Buble successfully grabs audience with upbeat music, easy humor
There's no doubt Michael Buble grabbed the attention of his fans at Van Andel Arena on Sunday night. What the singer didn't realize was he would be grabbed, too.
Michael Buble played to a crowd of more than 8,000 at Van Andel Arena.Halfway into the singer's hour-and-a-half set, after capturing 8,000 plus hearts with "I'm Your Man" and sending the ladies into a frenzy with "Fever," Buble chatted up the crowd, focusing on 12-year-old Abby, with whom he posed for a photo.
As he was returning from the front row, the 32-year-old Canadian hugged several front-row fans. The audience howled when one lady not only hugged the singer, but grabbed his buns in a vigorous, two-handed effort captured on the two huge screens on either side of the stage.
Buble sheepishly escaped her clutches, after gamely posing for a photo with the lady, and, with a flush in his cheeks, commented, "Boy, she did that like she meant it!"
Joined by a four-piece band and an eight-piece horns ensemble, Buble used the incident as more fodder to charm the crowd, as if his tunes weren't enough.
"Home," his breakthrough radio smash, was set against a backdrop of a montage of images from Grand Rapids.
"Everything," "Me and Mrs. Jones," and "Save the Last Dance for Me" were greeted with applause and screams from the crowd, of whom the majority were women. But not all, as he deftly pointed out.
Michael Buble was joined by a four-piece band and an eight-piece horns ensemble. After making fun of himself for being a sap, he dedicated a "manly song" to the men in the crowd, who, after all, probably didn't come to the show on their own steam. After that build-up, an Elvis tune was fun, but the song that came after it -- "Y.M.C.A"-- highlighted again Buble's keen sense of humor.
One segment had the singer pretend to leave the stage in a snit, which meant one of the band members -- in this case, Grand Rapids' own Nick Vayenas, a trombone player -- had to "cover" for him. Eventually, Buble returned and the two switched roles, with Vayenas singing well, I might add, and his boss playing the trombone.
Despite a scratchy throat, which Buble apologized for several times, but wasn't too noticeable, the singer was charming and engaging. He can come back to Grand Rapids any time he wants, and I have a feeling he would want to come back, especially if we promised him no more grabbing.
Naturally 7
The "vocal play" group Naturally 7 opened for Buble, and group members amazed the crowd with their peerless ability to mimic instruments with their mouths. Each of the seven members boasted a specialty, including trombone, harmonica, electric guitar and drums, with each sound produced by vocal effects. "Broken Wings," their original tune "Say You Love Me" and "Amazing Grace" highlighted the show and earned the novel group a standing ovation.
